Today when you go to the hospital, there are posters everywhere telling everyone how important it is to wash your hands in order to prevent the spreading of pathogens, but it wasn't alsways the case. A Freakonomics podacst tells the story of how a theory of infection causing "invisible cadiver particles" caused the hospital to begin a practice of hand washing.
