Autism and Microbes

Over the weekend I happened upon a really interesting documentary about the possible link between autism and the microbes in your digestive tract. They raise some very interesting questions and posibilities. Take a look: http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/episode/autism-enigma.html

How many Characteristics of Living Things are there?

Here is a video about the Characteristics of Life. You will notice that they list more than the 5 characteristics that are mentioned in our textbook (they mention 9). There is no exact number of characteristics; sometimes scientists will disagree about what is a characteristic and what is not.

If you google "Characteristics of life" you will see lists that contain 5 items, 6, items or even as many as 10 items. What are your thought on this?

Below is another video in a goofy song. This one claims that there are 7 characteristics:

For November 16th

Here is another video created by Hank Green that does an excellent job of explaining the circulatory and respiratory system.

Here are a few things to think about:

  • How do the respiratory and circulatory system work together?
  • Why do we breathe?
  • What do we need oxygen for?
  • What is the difference between a vein and an artery?
  • How does the diaphragm help us breath?

For November 6th

We have just finished learning all about our digestive system in class, but we haven't had much of a chance to talk about what we eat  and what is does to our bodies. Here is a little video that looks at obesity and what may or may not cause it. Watch it and share your thoughts using one of the blog response options.

Welcome!

Hello, and Welcome to my homework blog for Science 8.

If you are one of my science 8 students, congratulations! You are in the right place. This is where you can find all of you homework assignments for class. Before each class, your homework will be to come to this website and watch the video or read the readings that are posted here. You should come to class ready to talk and think about what you saw here on this blog. I will give you a couple of options to prepare your thoughts. You can view those homework response options here or click on the link at the top of the page. I'll keep the list simple for now, but I may add to it over time.

If you are a parent, welcome! I am glad you have found the site. I invite you to watch the videos or read over the posts with your child and discuss what you see, hear and discover.
